Day 13 - 7/3

Boston, here we are! After driving from our hotel for an hour or so, we arrived at the home of my Dad's cousin, Tiffany. She drove us to nearby downtown Boston. The whole day we spent on the Freedom Trail. It is a trail of red bricks or a painted red line that takes one through all the historic sites of Boston. We first saw the Old North Church. This is the oldest church in Boston being built in the early 1700's. It also served as the place where Thomas Newman hung lanterns in the steeple to warn others if the British were invading by land or sea. The famous phrase was, "One if by land, two if by sea." We also saw Fanueil Hall, which was built by a wealthy Bostonian to use as a city hall. There we attended a town meeting where park rangers led a discussion about the War of 1812. We got to see them dressed in time period clothing as well.
After seeing the Old North Church, we visited various historic places such as Paul Revere's home and an old printing press. Another highlight of our day was seeing the Old State House. This building is one of the oldest in Boston. Throughout the years, it has had many uses such as City Hall, a court, marketplace and a museum. There, we took two tours on the Boston Massacre and a general history tour of the State House. The Boston Massacre occurred right outside of the State House. It was interesting to hear how the skirmish started and see exactly where it happened.
Since we are here during Independence Day weekend, they also had special events. One of which was a audience participatory trial reenactment for the soldiers who were involved in the Boston Massacre.  Along with Blake, Lydia and Rachel, I was one of the soldiers. Dad and Nathan were witnesses. I ended up being the soldier that hit Nathan's character with my musket. The pretend trial was very fun to be in. My lawyer was John Adams and the guy who played him did an excellent job. The State House museum was very informative and we learned a lot about the history of Boston. The symbols that were used for the State House were the lion and the unicorn. The lion symbolizes courage while the unicorn showed power. It was interesting seeing a unicorn everywhere in a museum.
